Classification of dangerous goods and their characteristics

  1. Cargo CLASS 1 – explosive materials which by their properties may explode, cause fire with explosive action, and devices containing explosive substances and detonators intended to produce pyrotechnic effects;
    • subclass 1.1 – explosive and pyrotechnic substances and articles with a mass explosion hazard where the explosion instantly covers the entire load;
    • class 1.2 – explosive and pyrotechnic substances and articles not exploding by mass;
    • Class 1.3 – explosive and pyrotechnic substances and articles with a fire hazard with or without a minor explosive effect;
    • Class 1.4 – Explosive and pyrotechnic substances and articles presenting a minor explosion hazard during transport only if ignited or initiated, not destroying devices and packages;
    • Class 1.5 – Explosives with a mass explosion hazard which are so insensitive that initiation or transition from burning to detonation is unlikely during carriage;
    • Class 1.6 – articles containing exclusively non-detonation-sensitive substances that do not explode by mass and have a low probability of accidental initiation;
  2. Cargo CLASS 2 gases are compressed, liquefied by cooling and dissolved under pressure that meet at least one of the following conditions:
    • absolute vapor pressure at 50C equals or exceeds 3 kgc/cmÇOÇOPPa);
    • critical temperature below 50C. According to their physical state gases are divided into:
    • compressed, with critical temperature below -10C;
    • liquefied, with critical temperature equal to or above -10C but below 70C;
    • liquefied, with critical temperature equal to or above 70C;
    • dissolved under pressure;
    • liquefied by supercooling;
    • aerosol and compressed gases subject to special regulations.Subclasses:
    • subclass 2.1 – nonflammable gases;
    • class 2.2 – nonflammable poisonous gases;
    • class 2.3 – flammable gases;
    • class 2.4 – flammable poisonous gases;
    • class 2.5 – chemically unstable;
    • class 2.6 – chemically unstable poisonous.
  3. Cargo CLASS 3 – flammable liquids, liquid mixtures, and liquids containing solids in solution or suspensions that emit flammable vapors having a flash point in closed crucible of 61C or lower;
    • subclass 3.1 – flammable liquids having a low flash point and liquids having a flash point in a closed crucible below minus 18C or having a flash point in combination with hazardous properties other than flammability;
    • Class 3.2 – flammable liquids with an average flash point

      Dangerous goods of each class according to their physical and chemical properties, types and degree of danger in transportation are divided into subclasses, categories and groups, according to GOST 19433-88, listed below.
